Drawing on the latest scholarship and his extensive travels across the Middle East, North Africa, the Balkans and beyond, Marozzi brings to light a 1,400-year story that spans empires, continents and centuries.
From the 7th century to the present day, Marozzi tells the powerful stories of those enslaved – from concubines in the Abbasid courts and revolting slaves in 9th-century Iraq to pearl divers in the Gulf and political figures who once lived in bondage.
