112. The Archaeology Of Romany Gypsies
Henge

Romany Gypsies arrived in the UK at least 500 years ago and have been targets of persecution ever since. To contextualise modern day inequality within a long history of anti-Romany legislation, in 2024 John-Henry, from a Romany background himself, undertook the first ever archaeological excavation of a historic Romany site in Britain. As covered in Series 12 of Digging For Britain, he uncovered the little known ‘Gypsy Compounds’ and ‘Gypsy Rehabilitation Centre’, sites of forced assimilation that ran until the late 1970s. This talk covers the history of Romany Gypsies in the UK, the forgotten Romany heritage we can still see all around us, and the fascinating discoveries made as part of a truly unique excavation of an untold corner of history.
