Yet, within just fifty years, it was torn apart by five partitions, giving rise to twelve modern nations and leaving behind a legacy of conflict, displacement, and division. Historian and author Sam Dalrymple presents a gripping new history of how the Indian Empire was unmade – through political deals in London, revolutions on the ground, and wars that reshaped entire regions. Drawing on deep archival research, previously untranslated memoirs, and firsthand interviews, Dalrymple uncovers the human stories behind these seismic events, from the turmoil in Kashmir and Burma to the Rohingya genocide.
