What role could music play in a death camp? In 1943, SS officers ordered the formation of a women’s orchestra in Auschwitz-Birkenau. Nearly fifty female prisoners from eleven nations were forced to play music – marching tunes for labourers, concerts for Nazi officers, and even private performances for their captors. For many, it was a grim paradox: their musical talent saved their lives, yet they provided solace to the very men orchestrating genocide. Award-winning historian Anna Sebba sensitively uncovers their harrowing yet extraordinary story of survival, resilience, and the haunting power of music in the darkest of times.
