Alexander Courtney

Dr Alexander Courtney is a historian of early modern politics, specialising in the life and reign of King James VI and I (1566-1625). He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and Assistant Head (Teaching and Learning) at The Perse School, Cambridge. Alex’s first book, James VI, Britannic Prince: King of Scots and Elizabeth’s Heir, 1566-1603, was published by Routledge in June 2024. This is the opening part of a two-volume biography. To mark the 400th anniversary of the king’s death, Alex has also co-edited (with Michael Questier) a volume of new essays, James VI & I: Kingship, Government and Religion (Routledge, March 2025). Alex has appeared on Lucy Worsley Investigates (2025) and Elizabeth I’s Secret Agents (2017), for the BBC and PBS, as well as on historical podcasts, such as Charlie Higson’s Willy, Willy, Harry, Stee.
